Assessment criteria

IELTS ESSAYS TAKS 2 The examiner will assess your writing task 2 according to these criteria, while marking your essays.

1.Task response

The examiner will look to see you have fully understood and answered all parts of the question properly. Using relevant ideas developed and supported logically. You also need to show a clear effective position in your writing.

2. Coherence and cohesion

Your views and opinions are consistent and organized, and they should be appropriate linked. Your writing should be fluent in order to make it clear and effective position for your reader.

3.Lexical resources

The use of an extensive range of fluent, appropriate and accurate vocabulary with correct spelling.

4.Grammatical range. 

There should be correct use of English grammar, accurate and appropriate use of a range of sentences structure. And of course the accuracy of the language you use.

Types of essays. How to get 7.0

Opinion essays:

 In opinion essays, the task instruction requires you to either agree or disagree with the statement in question and you are supposed to choose one side. This type of essay asks you to express your opinion on an issue. Below are examples to understand it further. You need to discuss both opinions and support them.

  • Example 1: The speeding up of life in many areas such as travel and communication has negative effects on society at all levels— individual, national and global. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
  • Example 2: In many countries, good schools and medical facilities are available only in cities. Some people think new teachers and doctors should work in rural areas for a few years, but others think everyone should be free to choose where they work. Discuss and give your own opinion?

Arguments essays:

This type of essays usually has two side point of view or situation and the task is to discuss each and give your own views on it.

  • Example 1: Some people think that using animals for experimentation purpose is cruel, but other people think that is necessary for the development of science. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
  • Example 2: As global trade increases between different countries, many daily necessities are produced in other countries. Such goods are usually transported a long distance. Do the benefits of this trend outweigh its drawbacks?

Problems solutions essays.

In this essay type the task illustrate some problem and required solutions of the identify phenomena. In this type of writing, you have to give the cause of a problem or situation mentioned in the question and describe the result.

  • Example 1: Nowadays, we are living in a throw-away society. What are its causes and what are its problems?
  • Example 2: An increase in the production of consumer goods results in damage to the natural environment. What are the causes and possible solutions?

“It may indeed to be to say that global trade will enhance people’s interaction. This subject however, require further analysis.”

Sentence 2 benefits

“Global trade has been playing an increasingly important role in our day to day life. It has brought us a lot of benefits.”

Sentence 3 drawbacks

“ At the same time global trade has created some serious drawbacks as well.”

Sentence 4 thesis statement

“In this essay I will discuss some arguments for and against virtual communication and discuss the lost face to face associations because of the global trade.”

3 . Example essay: An increase in the production of consumer goods results in damage to the natural environment. What are the causes and possible solutions?

General 1 statement

“The use of consumer goods in our societies has been in debates for many years now.”

Sentence 2 problems

“Consumer goods have threatened many societies for the years.”

Sentence 3 solution

“However, their effects can also be combated successfully.”

 Sentence 4 thesis statement

“In this essay I will look at some of the effects of consumer goods use in societies, and suggest some solutions to the problems. “
